In 1965, Intel co-founder Gordon E. Moore, noted that the number of components in integrated circuits had doubled every year from the invention of the integrated circuit in 1958 until 1965, and he predicted that the trend would continue for at least ten years. Known as Moore’s Law, this prediction has proven amazingly accurate, not just for the semiconductor industry but for a wide assortment of technologies that are advancing at exponential rates and converging. More recently, other observers have claimed that the rate of doubling is actually increasing, occurring every twelve to eighteen months. That postulate has been dubbed the “The Law of Accelerating Returns.”

Computing and sensor capabilities can now quantify cellular and molecular structures easily and cheaply, and our tools are able to manipulate molecules. Three dimensional processors and memory drives along with biological, photon, and quantum computing will keep the rate of information improvement at an exponential pace. Today, even small companies are able to create the kinds of paradigm changes that were once the domain of large corporations, universities, and government agencies.
