Purpose is a motivator for success. People seek to connect themselves to a vision or mission that reflects who they are and what they believe. According to an article written by O.C. Tanner Institute, a global recognition and employee engagement organization, 30% of employees have expressed that their organization’s purpose does not reflect what is important to them. Even more shocking, 1 in 5 employees believe that there is no reason for their organization to exist. Companies that have succeeded in improving their employees’ sense of purpose have seen dramatic results in employee engagement and performance.

Individuals working specifically in the health technology industry are driven by seeing positive results in patients due to their technology more so than just in receiving a paycheck. Employees want to understand what journey they are on when working for an employer. As a health technology employer, it is crucial that your team understands the mission and the impact of your device, drug or service.

Only about half of employees say their organization’s purpose motivates them.

That’s almost half of your team that is truly motivated to be their most-productive self while working. Demonstrating the ways that your organization makes a difference, and how each position fits together to achieve that difference can result in an increase in motivation. There is an unconfirmed conversation between President John F. Kennedy and a janitor towards the beginning of NASA. JFK asked the man “What do you do?” The janitor replied, “Well, Mr. President, I’m helping to put a man on the moon.” Although the janitor was working far removed from the project of landing on the moon, he understood what roles had to be filled in order for others to do their jobs.

Leverage the power of purpose.

As employers and managers, it is our job to communicate our mission and vision in an effective way that encourages motivation and unity in our work cultures. Instill purpose in your employees as a means of promoting motivation. Stay tuned for our annual research report, to be released soon, which will share statistics about our industry’s talent shortage and what you can do, in addition to clarifying your mission and vision, to ensure you retain your valued employees.
